Tracing it’s origins back well over 100-years, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) exists to “promote firearm safety and marksmanship training with an emphasis on youth”. From the days of Teddy Roosevelt and his creation of the National Matches and National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice to today, the CMP hosts numerous activities in every state in the nation. Chances are there will be a regularly scheduled event of some sort within 100-miles of any aspiring rifleman in the country.
CMP Garand Clinics:
Hosted by local clubs, these clinics offer: a few hour introduction to the history of the CMP, the operation of the U.S. rifle, caliber .30, M1 (the M1-Garand!) AND an introduction to the fundamentals of position shooting. Clinics also include an introductory live fire match that serves to help qualify individuals for purchase of surplus rifles and ammunition direct from the CMP. Many clubs offer loaner rifles for the match portion and some even provide the ammunition.
